‘Written On The Walls’ is a harrowing account of systematic corruption that plagued the Greek society during an economic crisis; where poverty and unemployment led to rampant criminality. Maria Damanaki, in her first novel since winning the prestigious Nike Award for literature with her 2014 non-fiction book ‘A fish caught in a storm’ (translated as The Fisherman of the Aegean Sea), gives us an insightful account into the darkest side of modern day Greece.

Damanaki, who was born and raised in Kastania, Crete, writes from personal experience of corruption she witnessed in her native country; ‘Written On The Walls’ is a firsthand depiction of how crime has permeated through all levels of society during the recent financial crisis. Her narrative spans across generations with references to both past and current events, including those surrounding 2015 terrorist attack at Evia Airport where two soldiers were murdered by an ISIS-affiliated jihadist who was a citizen of Greece.

The story follows the lives of three characters: Nikos Kastaniotis (Nicky) – his grandfather, father and son; Panagiotis – a retired police officer whose family members are involved in organised crime; and Michalis – an ex-convict who returns to his hometown with hopes of making amends. The plot revolves around the corruption within Greek institutions where bribes have become commonplace, causing citizens to lose faith in their government.

Damanaki’s novel is a stark portrayal of human greed at its worst – her characters are ruthless and unrelenting in pursuit of money, power and self-preservation. Her writing style can be described as minimalist: she employs concise sentences that emphasize the simplicity of everyday life to make way for deeper meaning. The impact on society is palpable, with each character’s actions having far reaching consequences – not just for themselves but also their families and communities.

A powerful book in which readers will be gripped until the end; ‘Written On The Walls’ has received rave reviews from critics who praised Damanaki’s writing prowess as well as her ability to capture a slice of contemporary Greek history, while also exploring themes such as love and loss. For those interested in understanding more about the recent events that have shaped modern day Greece, this novel is an insightful read which highlights some disturbing truths; it has been translated into several languages worldwide.
