We have been through many challenges together. As our community has grown over time, we’ve seen more and more examples of people stepping up to help each other during tough times. These moments make me proud — they show how deeply embedded in Facebook's DNA is a sense that what unites us is stronger than anything else.
We have come together to fight the disease, offer hope and support for those who are sick or scared, and donate money to help organizations around the world reach people at this most trying time. In fact, since we launched Facebook’s COVID-19 Community Help page in March, more than 80 million people have used it to find help in their neighborhoods from neighbors, friends and strangers alike — that's about one out of every eight users on the platform globally who has reached out for or offered support through this feature.
More recently we started working with nonprofits across the country, including organizations such as Feeding America and Meals On Wheels, to help them continue reaching people in need despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19. We’ve seen an 80% increase in volunteer signups on Facebook since mid-March, with more than three million Americans signing up to offer their time and talents online — whether that is through organizing food drives or giving virtual tutoring sessions for students who are struggling during this difficult time.
At the same time, we have had a number of employees step forward in inspiring ways. Our people across the globe know they can make a difference by donating their paid time off to support charities that help our communities weather storms like these — and more than 350 of us at Facebook made this commitment during COVID-19, leading to an unprecedented $8.6 million in paid leave given directly back into the hands of organizations providing relief for families who need it most.
I am inspired by our community’s incredible strength and resilience as we work together to support each other through this time. We are only just beginning, but I know that when times get toughest, our Facebook community will come through once again — whether it is the people of New York City getting their city back up after Sandy or the residents of Parkland banding together in the face of tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. We have a long road ahead and there are many challenges to overcome, but if history has taught us anything it is that our Facebook community will continue to come together as one — and that we can always count on each other for help when we need it the most.
